5 of the Best Apple Watch in 2023

Jump to your favorite product

Since the original edition, the Apple watch has gotten it right, making the Apple Watch 8 one of the greatest smartwatches available. Only the temperature sensor and crash detection are given as improvements over the Watch 7, making the Apple Watch Series 8 the smallest update to the series ever. Although many older devices will soon get the new software, it still provides some great upgrades. The Watch 8 is the wristwatch to buy if you want an excellent, modern timepiece to pair with your iPhone. It doesn't outperform the Watch Ultra, though. You already know what the Apple Watch 8 looks like if you've even slightly used an Apple Watch 7. Every aspect of it is the same. If you've ever used an Apple Watch 5 or later, you'll also be close. Only the slight increase in screen size will give away the fact that this watch is different. Except for being somewhat larger, this Apple watch design is common and resembles the first model. The Apple Watch Ultra is the one to choose if you want something distinctive to wear on your wrist. The device's screen has a handy always-on display that, even when turned off, shows essential information before lighting up when the wrist is lifted.

FAQs

Even when your iPhone isn’t with you, your Apple watch can still do the following tasks with a Wi-Fi or cellular connection: make and accept phone calls as well as send and receive messages. You may use Siri to send messages, seek directions, and more. But you need an iPhone to configure an Apple watch. You must sync the watch with an iPhone to attach an Apple ID.

Although not waterproof, your Apple Watch Series 8 is water-resistant. You may, for instance, wear and use your Apple watch while exercising (sweat exposure is OK), taking a stroll in the rain, and washing your hands. These variants are built to endure water depths of up to 50 meters (164 feet), according to their ISO grade of 22810:2010 for water resistance. Despite the rating, Apple advises against wearing the watch when scuba diving or water skiing.

It should be tight yet pleasant to wear on your wrist. If you have a Solo Loop or Braided Solo Loop, the band should fit snugly on your wrist while being comfortable. When putting it on and taking it off, pull from the bottom of the band to stretch it over your wrist. Solo Loop’s length could grow with time.

The typical Bluetooth range is around 10 meters or 33 feet (this will vary in practice due to wireless interference). The Apple Watch Series 8 will try to connect to a suitable Wi-Fi network as a backup when it cannot establish a Bluetooth connection with the iPhone. You can still do activities on all other types of Apple watches even when you’re not near your iPhone or connected to Wi-Fi.

Connect the adapter to an electrical outlet. You may also insert the charging cord into a USB port. Place the Apple Watch Series 8 back on the charger. Your Apple watch will align with the charger’s magnets and display a battery charging symbol on the watch’s face. You cannot use your iPhone, iPad, or any of their specific chargers to charge your Apple watch. Ideally, you ought to be charging your Apple watch directly.

Pros & Cons

Advantages
  • Has an attractive color
  • Has a car crash detection
  • Has a temperature sensor
  • Ideal for everyday usage
  • Features menstrual and ovulation tracking
Disadvantage
  • Has a poor battery life
  • Its design is identical to the previous year’s
  • The temperature sensors are limited
The Apple Watch SE 2 offers the full Apple watch experience for a fantastic price. As a bonus, it has a battery life that exceeds what Apple claims. Unfortunately, there aren't always-on screen or more sophisticated health features, but this is a wonderful compromise for most users. The precise features you may desire and the price you're ready to spend for them will determine whether you should get the Apple Watch SE 2 or the Apple Watch Series 8. In addition to an ECG, pulse oxygen sensor, and temperature sensor intended to assist women in managing their reproductive health, the Series 8 includes an always-on screen that seems like a noteworthy advance. If you don't think any of those health sensors are important, the Series 8 is a lot more expensive for not much of a different experience. Because the Apple Watch SE 2 completely nails the whole experience, there are no complex concerns about what has been left out compared to the higher-end model. The gaps are noted above. You won't receive a slower CPU or any software limitations, so you don't have to worry about performance. These differences are not very significant given Apple's emphasis on the watch's black background and the smaller screen compared to the Watch Series 8.

FAQs

The following functions are still available on your Apple Watch SE when you don’t have your iPhone nearby: a Wi-Fi or cellular connection, making calls, receiving calls, and sending or receiving text messages. To send messages, get directions, and more, utilize Siri. However, configuring an Apple watch requires an iPhone. The watch must be linked to an iPhone for an Apple ID to be attached.

The Apple Watch SE can withstand water, but it is not waterproof. For instance, you can wear and use it when washing your hands, exercising (sweat exposure is OK), and taking a walk in the rain. According to their ISO rating of 22810:2010 for water resistance, these variations are designed to withstand water depths of up to 50 meters (164 feet). Despite this certification, Apple recommends against wearing the watch when water skiing or scuba diving.

When you wear your Apple Watch SE, it should be snug yet comfortable. The band should be tightly fitting and pleasant on your wrist if you have a Solo Loop or Braided Solo Loop. Pull from the band’s bottom to extend it over your wrist while putting it on and taking it off. The Solo Loop’s length could increase with time.

Around 33 feet or 10 meters is the normal Bluetooth range (this will vary in practice due to wireless interference). When you can’t make a Bluetooth connection with the iPhone, the Apple Watch SE will attempt to connect to a compatible Wi-Fi network as a backup. Even if your iPhone is not nearby or Wi-Fi is not active, you can still carry out certain tasks on all other models of Apple watches.

A power outlet should be connected to the adapter. Additionally, a USB port may accept the charging cable. You should place the back of the Apple Watch SE on the charger. When your Apple watch aligns with the charger’s magnets, a battery-charging icon appears on the watch’s face. You cannot charge your Apple watch with a charger made for an iPhone, iPad, or any other device. It would help if you ideally were charging your Apple watch immediately.

Pros & Cons

Advantages
  • Has an impressive battery life
  • Has a car crash detection
  • Extremely light and comfortable
  • Gives you a good mid-tier fitness tracking
  • Has a snappy and slick design
Disadvantage
  • Quite expensive for its features
  • Lacks the always-on screen feature
  • Lacks a built-in ECG
The Apple Watch Nike Series 8 is one of the best smartwatches on the market. The watch offers a small upgrade to the Watch Series (the enhancements over the Watch 7 are limited to the temperature sensor and crash detection). Although the new software will soon be available for many older devices, it offers some significant changes. Although it won't outperform the Watch Ultra, the Apple Watch Nike 8 is still the wristwatch to purchase if you want a superb, contemporary timepiece to link with your iPhone. If you've even slightly used an Apple Watch 7, you already know how the Apple Watch Nike 8 looks. It is identical in every way. If you've ever used an Apple Watch 5 or later, you'll find many similarities as well. The only difference between this watch and others is a slight increase in screen size. This Apple watch design is typical and almost identical to the original model, except for being somewhat bigger. Go with the Apple Watch Ultra if you want something unique to wear on your wrist. The Apple Watch Nike Series 8's screen has a convenient always-on display that, even when it is off, reveals important information before turning on when the wrist is raised.

FAQs

When your iPhone is not nearby, you may still use the following features on your Apple watch due to a Wi-Fi or cellular connection: call-making and call-taking, sending and receiving messages, using Siri to send iMessages, obtaining directions, and more. However, an iPhone is necessary to configure the Apple Watch Nike. You can’t connect an Apple ID to the watch without an iPhone being connected to it.

Despite its ability to survive water, the Apple Watch Nike is not waterproof. For instance, you can wear and use your Apple watch when washing your hands, working out (sweat exposure is OK), and going for a rainy-day stroll. These versions are made to endure water depths of up to 50 meters, as shown by their ISO grade of 22810:2010 for water resistance (164 feet). Despite this accreditation, Apple advises against wearing the watch when scuba diving or water skiing.

Your Apple Watch Nike should be comfortable to wear and be snug at the same time. The band should tightly fit and be comfortable on your wrist if you have a Solo Loop or Braided Solo Loop. Extend the band around your wrist by pulling from the bottom to put it on and take it off. The Solo Loop’s duration should grow with time.

The typical Bluetooth range is around 10 meters or 33 feet (this will vary in practice due to wireless interference). The Apple Watch Nike will try to join a suitable Wi-Fi network as a backup if there’s an unsuccessful Bluetooth connection with the iPhone. You can still do certain things on any other Apple watch model, even if your iPhone is not close by or if Wi-Fi is not turned on.

Connecting the adapter to a power outlet is required. A USB port may also accommodate the charging cord. On the charger, you should put the Apple Watch Nike back. A battery-charging symbol shows up on your Apple watch’s display when it is positioned such that it faces the charger’s magnets. You cannot use an iPhone, iPad, or other device’s charger to recharge your Apple watch. Idealistically, your Apple Watch Nike ought to be charged right away.

Pros & Cons

Advantages
  • Has a car crash detection
  • Features menstrual and ovulation tracking
  • Has an attractive color
  • Has a temperature sensor
  • Ideal for everyday usage
Disadvantage
  • Its design is identical to the previous year’s
  • The temperature sensors are limited
  • Has a poor battery life
The Apple Watch Ultra is a large device. The 49mm x 44mm x 14mm casing is bigger than the Apple Watch Series 8 and Watch SE 2, but it isn't all that different from the 45mm x 45mm x 10mm Galaxy Watch 5 Pro or genuinely athletic smartwatches like the 46mm x 46mm x 14mm Garmin Forerunner 955. If you have thin wrists, the watch will seem enormous, not because it is out of proportion, but rather because it is so massive. To help you decide whether it will fit your wrist or not, we compared the size to comparable big watches. The Water Lock gives the watch a surprisingly mechanical feel when submerged in water; it fizzes and whirls as it expels any unwelcome droplets, making it seem almost alive. The Apple Watch Ultra has a surprising amount of personality, considering that it is still a smartwatch and has deliberate aesthetics and a can-do attitude. There is no similar comparison with the Apple Watch Series 7, but this character (and the size) allows you to wear it with your arm tucked behind it and flaunt it. While you may customize the overview to show stride length, vertical oscillation, and ground contact time, a run will show your heart rate zones (based on its algorithm or explicitly configured by you). Even though this data is not unique to the Watch Ultra, the bigger smartwatch's screen allows you to see six separate data sets simultaneously, making it more useful at a glance.

FAQs

Because of a Wi-Fi or cellular connection, you can still utilize the following Apple watch functionalities even when your iPhone is not close: making and receiving calls messaging, iMessages, getting directions, and other tasks with Siri. The Apple watch configuration, however, requires an iPhone. The watch requires an iPhone to be linked for an Apple ID to be added.

The Apple Watch Ultra is water-resistant but not waterproof. You may wear and use your Apple watch, for instance, while washing your hands, exercising (sweat exposure is OK), and taking a walk outside on a wet day. According to their ISO rating of 22810:2010 for water resistance, these models are designed to withstand water depths of up to 50 meters (164 feet). Despite this certification, Apple recommends staying away from using the watch during water skiing or scuba diving.

You should be able to wear your Apple Watch Ultra comfortably without it feeling too tight. When wearing a Solo Loop or Braided Solo Loop, the band should be snug and at ease on your wrist. Just pull the band outward from the bottom of your wrist to put it on and take it off. The length of the Solo Loop may increase with time.

Around 10 meters or 33 feet is the normal Bluetooth range (this will vary in practice due to wireless interference). If the Apple watch cannot connect to the iPhone through Bluetooth, it will attempt to join a compatible Wi-Fi network as a backup. Even if your iPhone is not nearby and Wi-Fi is off, you can still do certain tasks on any other Apple watch model.

Connecting the adapter to a power outlet is necessary. The charging wire may also fit into a USB port. You should place the Apple Watch Ultra back on the charger. Your Apple watch’s display shows a battery-charging sign when it is oriented to face the charger’s magnets. You cannot use the charger for an iPad, iPhone, or another device to recharge an Apple watch. You should preferably charge your Apple watch right away.

Pros & Cons

Advantages
  • Has a customizable action button
  • Has a dual frequency GPS
  • Features an emergency siren
  • Has a better battery life
  • Has a loud speaker
Disadvantage
  • Expensive
  • Has a large size
  • Its crown may be harmful to skin

FAQs

Users can still use the essential Apple watch features even if their iPhone is not nearby thanks to a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. You can make calls, receive calls, send or receive text messages, use Siri for iMessages, get directions, and more. However, the Apple Watch Hermès setup needs an iPhone. You must connect the watch to an iPhone to add an Apple ID.

“Waterproof,” but not “water resistant,” is how the Apple Watch Hermès is described. Wearing and using your Apple watch is okay when doing certain tasks, such as washing your hands, working out (little perspiration is acceptable), and going on a rainy day stroll. These versions have a water resistance grade of 22810:2010, which means they can tolerate water depths of up to 50 meters (164 feet). Although the watch has this certification, Apple advises against using it when scuba diving or water skiing.

The Apple Watch Hermès should fit comfortably without feeling too tight. The band should fit snugly around your wrist while using a Solo Loop or Braided Solo Loop. Just pull the band from your wrist to put it on and take it off. With time, the Solo Loop’s length could grow.

The normal Bluetooth bandwidth is around 10 meters or 33 feet (this will vary in practice due to wireless interference). As a fallback option, the Apple watch will try to join a suitable Wi-Fi network if it cannot establish a Bluetooth connection with the iPhone. You can still carry out certain operations on any other Apple watch model even if your iPhone is not close by and Wi-Fi is not turned on.

One electricity outlet is required to hook up the adapter. A USB port could also accommodate the charging cable. Place the charger on the Apple watch’s back. When facing the charger’s magnets, your Apple watch’s display shows a battery-charging icon. It is not possible to recharge an Apple watch using an iPad, iPhone, or another device’s charger. Try to charge your Apple Watch Hermes as soon as possible.

Apple Watch for runners vs. Garmin

A wristwatch may help you improve your running technique. It’s enlightening and inspiring and helps individuals stay dedicated to their fitness goals. It also measures their progress and can be used to interact with the online fitness community using fitness trackers and GPS jogging. The most popular smartwatches on the market are Garmin and Apple watches. Garmin products are GPS running watches, but the Apple watch is intended to be a fitness tracker. Smartwatches by Garmin feature longer battery life and more precise GPS mapping and navigation capabilities. Apple watches provide more functions and better lifestyle monitoring. Which is better for runners: the Apple Watch or Garmin?

While Apple watches are smartwatches with greater lifestyle capabilities, Garmin watches are geared for the workout population. Having said that, the top-tier Garmin and Apple watches are head-to-head when it comes to functionality, fitness tracking, and features like contactless payment. Both Apple and Garmin watches are excellent for running, but before deciding, you need to think about what you want from the watch. Do you need an accurate wrist-based GPS or a fitness tracker?

The GPS on Garmin watches is much better. They employ many satellites — GLONASS, Galileo, and GPS — for more precise tracking and quicker signal lock-on. Garmin is a superior option if reliable GPS tracking is crucial to you. Although the accuracy of the Apple Watch 7 is higher than that of the Apple Watch 3, it still falls short of Garmin. The Apple watch is still an excellent choice if you just want to know how far you run and are not too concerned with navigation.

The Apple Watch 3 and the Garmin Forerunner 55 include wrist-based heart rate monitors that measure your heart rate at rest and when you’re running. It is well known that wrist-based heart rate monitors are less precise. The heart rate sensor on the Apple Watch 7 has been upgraded, increasing its accuracy. You may use a chest strap with any Garmin gadget to precisely track your heart rate during exercise. Chest straps are incompatible with Apple watches. Both gadgets accurately detect your heart rate, although the Apple watch series has a minor advantage in recent versions. If you desire a more precise score, Garmin has the option of permitting chest strap monitoring.

The Apple watches include a built-in GPS for monitoring outdoor activities, but Garmin is a superior choice if you require a watch to help you precisely traverse the terrain. You can browse topographical maps on the Garmin Fenix, which also provides route navigation and breadcrumb trails. Although you can use Google Maps to navigate on the Apple watch, this is not particularly helpful for trail running and hiking. Both solutions are much more practical than carrying your phone while you run. The more expensive Garmin Fenix for running navigation is much superior to the Apple watch (particularly on trails). The lower-cost Garmin versions, which don’t have topographic maps, and the Apple watch have less difference.

As specialized sports watches, Garmin gadgets can monitor a variety of parameters, including both basic fitness measurements and more in-depth running metrics. You must purchase the Apple Fitness Plus app to obtain more insightful running statistics, even if the Apple watch can monitor all the essential fitness parameters. Apple watches are equipped with an altimeter, gyroscope, and accelerometer. These sensors enable monitoring of running data, including cadence, stride length, and pace. Your stride length, cadence, ground contact time balance, and vertical oscillation are all tracked by Garmin devices while you’re jogging. You may adjust your performance with this. While Apple needs a paid membership for its advanced data processing, both smartphones provide comprehensive running stats. As-is, Garmin performs well.

The most recent Apple watch model has a maximum battery life of just 18 hours. Only roughly six hours are available when the GPS is turned on. An Apple Watch 7 may operate in power-saving mode for up to 36 hours. Charging an Apple watch daily is not ideal if you run long distances or spend days on the trails. Depending on the model and features you utilize, Garmin watches have a battery life of seven to 14 days. When in power-saving mode, the Fenix has an astounding 80-day battery life. It may last for nine days with consistent usage. With normal usage, the Venu can last up to five days. It can last up to two days in always-on mode, which is still longer than the top-tier Apple watch.

For Apple watches, hundreds of third-party running applications are available in the Apple Store, including Strava, Runkeeper, Nike Run Club, and many more. Although there aren’t nearly as many third-party applications in the Garmin Connect IQ store, you can still sync your Garmin’s data with well-known running programs like Strava, Runkeeper, and Nike Run Club. Garmin Coach is a free function available via Garmin Connect. You may choose one of three knowledgeable running instructors to lead you through a flexible and individualized training plan. Whether your objective is to run your first 5K or improve your marathon time, Garmin Coach may be helpful. You must utilize third-party applications, like Nike Run Club, to use an Apple watch to obtain the same kind of virtual coaching. You do have to pay a monthly fee for some of the more effective virtual running coach applications. Although neither system is as sophisticated as specialized performance monitors like Whoop, most users find them more than enough.

What to consider when buying an Apple smartwatch

Buying such an expensive electronic item does require some knowledge. This is because there are three standard varieties of wearable devices: the Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch, and Apple Watch Edition. Additionally, with more than 30 customization options, pricing may vary from $349 to $17,000. The Apple Store, Best Buy, Target, and B&H Photo and Electronics in New York City are the brick-and-mortar stores where you can find an Apple Watch. They can also be found online. Here are the top five things to look out for while shopping for an Apple watch.

  • Battery life: Each Apple watch may be used for 18 hours after a full charge. However, the sluggish rate of charging and a battery life that significantly decreases when navigation and music player capabilities are turned on are among the early concerns about Apple’s wristwatch.
  • Type of band: A vibrant athletic band is included with the Apple Watch Sport, which retails for $549 for the 38-mm model with the band. Customers may choose from a variety of bands, however, from leather to stainless steel. This might increase the cost. For instance, the price of the identical 38-mm Apple watch with a traditional buckle band would increase the cost by $100.
  • Big watch case: Cases are square with rounded sides, but the materials also affect the price you’ll pay. The normal watch case is composed of stainless steel, while the Sport case is constructed of aluminum.
  • Insurance: The watch’s guarantee covers normal wear and tear, urgent battery issues, and minor damage like hairline cracks. However, if you buy an AppleCare+ plan, the limited guarantee that comes with each watch purchase extends to two years and covers up to two instances of unintentional damage.

How to care for your Apple Watch

It might be beneficial to switch the Apple watch off and back on if it’s acting up. Press the side button to display the power controls, then drag the Power Off slider. After a little delay, press and hold the side button once more until the Apple logo appears. The watch could sometimes freeze and need to be reset by force. If so, press and hold the side button and the Digital Crown until the Apple logo appears. You may manually switch the watch into Power Reserve mode to actively save battery life. In this mode, everything is turned off except for a minimum digital time display that only displays when you touch the side button.

Additionally, this mode activates when the battery is just 10% full. Tap the Power Reserve button on the Battery glance. Alternately, press and hold the side button until the Power Reserve slider appears and is moved to the on position. You should reset the Apple watch to factory settings if anything looks exceptionally off with it or if you want to sell or give it away. The associated iPhone receives an automated backup of the watch’s data, including watch face settings and similar information. So, before you reset the iPhone, ensure it is saved up to iCloud or a computer using iTunes.
